Good health for kids can start with good dental care.
A new study by the University at Buffalo found a connection between children’s dental health and their likeliness of being overweight. The study showed that 2-to 5-year-olds who had cavities in their baby teeth that required intense intervention had much greater odds (28%) than other children of being too heavy or obese.
The study offered more conclusive evidence of the connection between dental health and obesity, beyond the already existing anecdotal observations by health professionals who treat overweight youngsters with tooth decay.
The survey also found that only 33% of mothers considered oral health as a “concern” for their toddlers.
Perhaps dental professionals can recommended to the parents of these patients that they also see a nutritionist.
Pediatric dentists recognize that young children often experience angst and dread when faced with a dental appointment. Visit DentalPlans.com to find ways to make dental care visits fun and enjoyable for kids.

DentalPlans.com made headlines in Minnesota’s Star Tribune for helping people receive deep discounts on dental care.
The story profiles a woman who was stuck between a rock and a hard place. Her dentist told her she needed to have a $2,000 dental procedure. She didn’t have dental insurance. Even if she did, she would have had at least a 12 month waiting period, not to mention deductibles, costly insurance premiums, and annual plan limitations.
She purchased a discount dental plan and saved about $800 on the dental procedure she needed — for a low annual membership fee of about $100. The plan activated in only three days, so she could receive immediate care at a discounted rate.
We’re happy to hear stories like these that have happy endings. If you have a positive story or testimonial for our services, let us know!

In an effort to curb immediate spending, many patients are delaying necessary dental care that can be costly down the road.
The economic climate is still touchy and bleak for many, and it has forced many Americans to put off dental treatment. When you consider the link between gum disease and major medical health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, it becomes apparent that regular dental visits are just as important as regularly seeing a physician.
Receiving preventative care and taking care of small problems before they become big problems actually pays off. According to Oral Health America, the cost of preventative dental treatment is 10 times less than the cost of managing symptoms of dental disease in a hospital emergency room.
Since 1999, DentalPlans.com has made dental care accessible and affordable for its thousands of members. DentalPlans.com offers an impressive selection 30+ discount dental plans to individuals, families, and groups. Plan members receive deep discounts on the dental care they need from a dentist they know and trust. DentalPlans.com is proud to provide affordable alternatives to dental insurance.

A survey reveals a new majority mantra, “Conserve paper and be green.” Eighty-five percent of consumers are annoyed with paper documents, and they want to do more online. The consumer survey shows that nearly three out of four adults are frustrated with completing paper-based documents, forms, or business agreements.
In the survey, Consumers reveal specifically why hardcopy forms are such a pain:
- 72% said that the fields in many forms and documents are often too small to write in
- 38% stated that it’s too inconvenient to return signed documents by fax or mail
- 34% said their handwriting is too messy for others to read
- 23% indicated that they make too many mistakes
For tech-savvy consumers accustomed to searching for and storing documents electronically, organizing and keeping track of paper documents can be challenging. Only 20% of all adults admitted to accidentally losing or destroying important hardcopy documents, but nearly one in three (30%) young adults aged 18-34 have trouble keeping paper-based documents safe. In addition to a computer, 18% of all adults said they use a mobile device, such as a RIM®, BlackBerry®, or Apple® iPhone®, to conduct their daily business.
This survey provides a snapshot of consumer preferences and demonstrates the growing role that smart, streamlined solutions have on the average person’s daily activities. Individuals utilize web-based applications, e-readers, and mobile computing platforms to easily do business anytime and anywhere.
DentalPlans.com is doing its part to go green and create easy ways for members to manage their dental plans memberships online. The DentalPlans.com Member’s Area houses each member’s plan information and membership records online to help reduce the burden of paperwork. Many consumers fall prey to the lure of balanced, healthy, sugar-free snacks. It’s easy to reason that these good-for-the-body treats would also be good for dental health.
But buyer beware: consumer activists are now speaking out about the harmful acidic content of these sugar-free snacks, which have been touted as healthy alternatives to sweets and chocolate. Convenience foods are now considered the principal cause of increasing rates of tooth decay among young children across the world.
Snacks such as Kellogg’s Nutri Grain bars are high in harmful acids that weaken tooth enamel and make teeth more vulnerable to decay. While these occasional treats will not harm dental health, eating sugary and acidic foods and drinks regularly will eventually cause the enamel to erode and become damaged.
Parents can help combat the effects of tempting, harmful snacks by encouraging their kids to eat a healthy and balanced diet and maintain good oral hygiene.

Clever advertising and dental care offices unite to bring you this very important message: The calcium in milk can be very beneficial to dental health.
This message is being relayed in a series of TV commercials that feature the make-believe Mootopia, where all of the residents reap the benefits that milk brings to their dental health.
But what is a good story without a little drama? Enter trouble in the paradise of Mootopia.
One dentist who lives in Mootopia has no patients and nothing to do because –alas—all of the residents of Mootopia drink their milk, and therefore, they are all in perfect dental health.
These commercials, part of the “Got Milk?” campaign for the California Milk Processor Board, are being aired in dentist’s offices in California markets, the New York Times reports. According to the milk board, it is their first time using dental offices to distribute commercials, which were created by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners of the Omnicom Group.
What do you think? Would you like to see these entertaining “Got milk?” commercials in your dentist’s office?

What do fingerprints, DNA samples, and dental care have in common? Identifying a person, apparently. An individual’s dental patterns can identify a person as accurately as DNA testing in forensics.
“There is sufficient dental diversity between people to enable a scientifically-based human identification method to be developed for forensic purposes,” says Stella Martin de la Heras, legal and forensic medicine professor who lead the dental forensic study at the University of Granada (UGR).
The Spanish researchers from the UGR reached this conclusion after analyzing the dental patterns of more than 3,000 people. The team conducted a statistical analysis of these people’s full and partial sets of teeth taken from the databases in the National Surveys of Oral Health 1993, 2000, and 2005. These results were published in Forensic Science International.
Imagine all of the applications that this research can bring!
